Nitrogen Cycle

Author: Last updated:

The term 'nitrogen cycle' is correctly applied to the natural process by which nitrogen is used by plants, then consumed or broken down by other organisms into waste products, which are then converted by bacteria into a form that is again used by plants.

In the aquarium the nitrogen cycle is a common term for the filtration process that converts harmful ammonia and nitrites into less harmful nitrates, with or without plants, and is also known as nitrification.
