Platy
Fish code No.1903
The Platy is quickly approaching the Guppy in terms of popularity and despite heavy breeding, is still a relatively hardy aquarium fish. There are an endless number of colour varieties available, as well as a 'hi-fin' variety with and enlarged dorsal fin. These bright, active, peaceful fish have an obvious attraction and are well suited to a community of other peaceful fishes. Although they may withstand temperatures down to 18C they are best kept only in tropical aquariums, despite the fact they are often recommended for coldwater or unheated aquaria. A good alternative for unheated tanks is the Variatus Platy (Xiphophorus variatus) which is much more suited to cooler water. Provide hiding spots amongst hardy plants and if kept in small numbers (4 or less), keep several females to a male.
