Plec
Hypostomus sp.
Plec
code No.
0305
The common Plec is a well-known aquarium fish that is popular for its algae eating abilities and hardy, peaceful nature. A number of different species are sold under the name 'Plecostomus' although they all have similar attributes. Despite its complete unsuitability for most aquariums it is unfortunately often recommended and irresponsibly sold to anyone who wishes an 'algae eating fish', irrespective of their aquarium conditions. The Plec will grow to at least 30cm, regardless of tank size, and potentially up to 50-60cm and at these sizes will unwittingly cause a great deal of destruction and mess in an aquarium. However, in large aquariums (150cm+) the Plec will make an excellent tank mate for almost all fish, including larger barbs and cichlids, providing décor is minimal. The Plec is also often sold for coldwater aquariums and although it will survive at lower temperatures, its hardy nature should not be abused in this way. Good alternatives to the Plec for smaller aquariums include the Bristlenose and Clown Plecs.
