Butterfly Goodeid

Ameca splendens

The Butterfly Goodeid is an unusual little fish which has become more popular in recent years. Although it is often described as peaceful, males can fight and cause damage, and the fish may be nippy towards others. The fish is therefore best mixed with other small to medium sized robust fishes. A varied diet, including some vegetable matter, is essential for good health and body shape.

Family Goodeidae (Splitfins) | Other names Butterfly Splitfin, Goodeid | Origin North & Central America; Mexico, Jalisco | Breeding Livebearer | Natural Water Conditions pH 6-8, soft to hard | Sexing Males have a larger dorsal fin, yellow tipped tail fin, and modified anal fin. Females have dark spots/bands
