Otocinclus

Otocinclus vittatus

The Otocinclus is the best all rounder for small algae eaters; they are peaceful, will not harm plants, and can be kept with a wide range of fish sizes. The ideal tank for these fish would be a heavily planted environment with small, peaceful tankmates. There are a number of species of Otocinclus and a similar, but slightly yellow/brown species O. affinis is also often seen for sale. If natural algae is not available, suppliment the fish's diet with algae tablets or vegetable based foods.

Family Loricariidae (Armoured catfishes) | Synonyms Otocinclus macrospilus, O. mariae | Origin South America; Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil | Breeding Eggs are attached to plant leaves | Natural Water Conditions pH 6-7.5, very soft to hard | Natural Habitat Heavily vegetated waters, clear moving water | Sexing Males are more slender
