Scat

Scatophagus argus

The Scat is a lively and relatively peaceful shoaling fish, well suited to a brackish aquarium with similar sized tank mates. Purchasing these fish should require some serious consideration to their future needs; at up to 30cm they will require a very large tank. As the fish age, their need for saltwater increases and adults will need to be kept in almost full strength saltwater, or they will die a premature death. Scats will quickly eat any plant material, and this should be a part of their diet along with a variety of other foods. Keep in groups with other large brackish fish, provide plenty of swimming room and a few hiding spots amongst root-like wood.

This fish is excluded from the Compatibility Checker as it is unsuitable for community aquariums or may require expert care.

Family Scatophagidae (Scats) | Other names Spotted Scat | Origin Indo-Pacific region | Natural Water Conditions pH 7.5-8.5, brackish | Natural Habitat Lower reaches of rivers, estuaries, mangroves, and open seawater
