This amazon sword produces large leaves in comparison to the plant size, hence the common name. The leaves are typically up to 30cm in length and 20cm wide, light green and robust in appearance. If given adequate conditions, the plant will produce a number of larger leaves above the waters surface. Because of the large, domineering size of this plant, it is best suited as an individual specimen background plant in larger aquaria. Ideal conditions for growth include a good iron and fertiliser-rich substrate and plenty of light. The plant is adaptable however, and should survive well in most aquaria. Removing larger or older leaves and occasional trimming of the roots will prevent the plant from growing to large.
