The numerous grass-like leaves of this plant are rigid, firm and able to withstand fast-flowing water. Older leaves will begin to yellow before thinning and eventually dieing, at which point they should be removed. Fully submerged this plant may last many months, even a year in good conditions. The plant does not need much root space and is ideal for gaps in rockwork above the water or in marginal areas. The plant does better submerged at lower temperatures. A smaller variety, Acorus gramineus var. pusillus is also readily available and has a shorter (5-10cm) dark green leaf
