The unusual leaf shape of this plant can look very effective when used in groups and set against other light-green leaved plants, for best effect use shorter foreground plants around the base. The leaves vary in length depending on aquarium conditions, in good conditions the leaf may reach 10-12cm in length although usually reaches only 8-10cm. For the best conditions provide bright lighting and a nutrient & iron-rich loose substrate. Under moderate lighting the leaves may appear thin and/or weak, bright lighting also intensifies the leaf colour. The Pictured plant shows the terrestrial leaf form which is most commonly seen for sale. Under good aquatic conditions the leaves will become longer, thinner, and needle-like with a pink-red colour.
