The stem and leaves of this plant vary between brown and red depending on various aquarium conditions. The colour is unusual and relatively unique amongst common aquarium plants, making Red Milfoil a popular choice in planted aquaria. The fine, feathery leaves of the plant require clean, well filtered water; any debris and/or algae will clog the leaves, preventing the use of light. Unlike the Brazilian Milfoil, this plant does best in neutral or slightly hard water. Strong lighting is a must for this plant and individual stems should not be planted too close together or light may be blocked from the lower leaves. The plant will spread across the surface and produce side shoots. Iron-rich fertilisers will improve growth.
