A substance that occurs naturally at low levels, phosphate is an important plant nutrient, but also encourages algal blooms in the aquarium and pond environments. Most aquariums and ponds experience excessive levels of phosphates, which originate from tap-water and fish waste.

Phosphates can be removed by either using pre-filtered or reverse osmosis water, or through the use of phosphate removing media in the filter.
