A venturi is a device often attached to the outlet of a pump, which injects air into the water flow to increase aeration and surface movement. The device works by forcing water through a smaller space followed by an expansion, which creates a pressure variation and sucks air in through a tube reaching above the waters surface.

Venturi's can be helpful in ponds or on powerful pumps and will increase overall oxygenation, but have very limited effectiveness on smaller pumps such as those used in aquariums.
