What Should I Feed My Fish?

Author: Last updated:

Whilst many foods advertise themselves as 'complete' foods, it is always best to offer your fish a variety of different foods. Providing a more varied menu ensures your fish get all the essential vitamins and minerals, as well as a more stimulating feed, which can have a psychological effect.

From a nutritional point of view, dried foods are best, but your fish will often prefer live or frozen foods. Feeding either type as the only food will have harmful effects.

A rough guide is to make half the diet from named brand dried foods, which will provide all the essentials and produce a low quantity of waste, and make the rest up from a variety of different foods. Most fish will take several types of frozen food, pellet food, or flake food. For the more adventurous, you can even feed your fish some fruits and vegetables, but not meats or processed foods.

A good feeding regime should have variety and be fed little and often.
