An invertebrate, or invert, is an animal without a backbone, or spine (vertebrae)
Over 97% of all animal species are invertebrates. This percentage is often surprising to many people, who assume animals to only be those creatures that can swim, walk, or fly and show a noticeable level of intelligence. In fish-keeping the term 'inverts' usually applies to animals such as corals, sponges, shrimps, snails, and crabs.
