Lateral Line
The lateral line can be seen as a series of 'dots' following a line along a fishes body, usually from the back of the head to the base of the tail, and is made up from a number of pits and canals set just below the skin.
The function of the lateral line system is to pick up specific vibrations and pressure changes from the surrounding water. The information collected by the lateral line system tells the fish where objects are in relation to their bodies, helping them avoid bumping into things, and also helping to identify the location of other fish, such as the other members of a shoal.
