The end result of most biological filtration is nitrate, which is only toxic to sensitive freshwater fish at levels above 50mg/l.
Nitrates should be carefully monitored, since levels can rise unnoticed in aquariums, causing sudden problems when new fish (from low nitrate water) are introduced.
Nitrates can be removed from the tank through water changes, live plants, or the use of special nitrate removing media.
