Nitrite NO2
Author:Think Fish Last updated: 15 June 2013 06:40
A toxic waste product created by the conversion of ammonia by bacteria. Nitrites break down red blood cells and oxidize iron in the blood, reducing the bloods capacity to carry oxygen.
Under ideal conditions nitrites should be kept at zero, but most hardy fish can tolerate brief fluctuations of up to 5mg/l.
