Often appearing as a thickened root, a rhizome can be seen on many plants and is used as an organ for storing food energy. Plants that live in harsh environments, have a seasonal nature, or creep along rocks or wood rather than grow in substrates often have rhizomes to store energy. New shoots are often produced along the length of a rhizome, using stored energy to grow until the shoot is large enough to obtain its own foodstuffs.
