Substances dissolved in water, which are required by plants, fish, and other organisms for normal body functions. Trace elements are often lacking in pure or reverse osmosis water and must be replaced with a mineral additive before the water is used in the aquarium. Trace element additives are used extensively in saltwater aquariums, where corals may require regular replenishment of trace elements to maintain good health.
